Our Science

Ganeden Labs offers probiotic ingredients that are safe, effective and easy to use. Our depth of scientific research delivers confidence and expertise to your product development.

The core of Ganeden’s technology is based around the bacteria Bacillus coagulans and our commercial probiotic strain GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086). GanedenBC30 is a superior probiotic in many respects because of its inherent physical properties.

Critical Probiotic Bacteria Factors:

  1. SURVIVABILITY
Ganeden probiotics survive in significant numbers and reach the intestinal tract*
  2. COLONIZATION
Ganeden probiotics successfully colonize the intestines*
  3. LACTIC ACID PRODUCTION
Ganeden probiotics produces the preferred L+ optical isomer of lactic acid

In numerous clinical studies, GanedenBC30 has been shown to aid digestion and improve immune function when used regularly . It has also proven effective in a variety of applications in other areas.

GanedenBC30 has unique characteristics that make it much more resistant to heat, acid and other environmental factors than traditional probiotic organisms such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. This makes it an ideal choice for product development for numerous reasons:

  • It is able to withstand heat, so it can be used to formulate products requiring high heat process and is shelf stable at room temperature
  • It can withstand pressure so it can be manufactured into tablets, pellets or other processed materials
  • The cells remain viable for long periods of time allowing for longer shelf life products.

These physical properties are also important for the efficacy of the organism. Many probiotics do not survive well in the acid in the stomach. This leaves very few cells to populate the intestinal tract and provide benefit. GanedenBC30:

  • Survives gastric acidity so that it may enter the small intestine, where it's primary function begins.
  • Is able to metabolize a wide range of carbohydrates, proteins and fats making it ideal for improving digestion.
  • Colonizes both the small and large intestine, providing maximum benefit.

This probiotic family has a long safe history of use and has never been implicated in a pathogenic event. Other safety facts:

  • It has been sold in consumer products by Ganeden Biotech since 2003 with nearly 300 million doses have been sold without any adverse effects.
  • Toxicology tests have shown that it is safe even in amounts 800 times more than the normal daily dosage.

History

The core probiotic in our portfolio is GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086)

Genus: Bacillus

Species: Bacillus coagulans

Bacillus coagulans was first isolated and described in 1933 and was elaborated in the fifth edition of Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology. It was initially considered to be a spore-forming Lactobacillus. Since B. coagulans exhibits characteristics typical of both genera Lactobacillus and Bacillus, its taxonomic position between the families Lactobacillaceae and Bacillaceae was often debated. However, in the seventh edition of Bergy's, it was finally transferred to the genus Bacillus. DNA-based technology was used in distinguishing between the two species of bacteria which are morphologically similar and possess similar physiological and biochemical characteristics.

  • Bacillus coagulans is a Gram-positive spore-forming rod 0.9u by 3.0u to 5.0u in size, aerobic to microaerophilic.
  • On activation of spore formation in the acidic environment of the stomach, this organism can germinate and proliferate in the intestine, producing the favored L (+) optical isomer of lactic acid.
  • Bacillus coagulans provides a biotherapeutic platform for several potentially useful applications.
