What is a Probiotic?
As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), probiotics are live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.
What does CFU stand for?
Colony Forming Units, this is the standard measurement of dosage used for probiotic cells.
How much GanedenBC30™ should we put into our product?
That dosage levels depend on the recover rate of the material, post-processing and at the end of shelf life. In general, dosages range from several hundred million CFU per serving to two billion CFU per serving.
Why can’t I just use a generic probiotic strain in my food product? Isn’t a probiotic a probiotic?
That depends; GanedenBC30 is the only probiotic to use if you have a product that requires heating, mixing, rolling, extrusion, drying, freezing or where you require viability on the shelf without refrigeration. So in these cases your best choice is GanedenBC30.
I heard that Bacillus is not well suited for use in food applications
Just as not all people are the same, all Bacillus strains are not created equal. And there are strains of Bacillus that we would not recommend to be used in products meant for human consumption. Other strains such as Bacillus Cereus, Bacillus Subtilis can cause food spoilage and health issues therefore they should be avoided. But GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086) has been proven exceptionally safe, effective and stable. GanedenBC30 has been used in hundreds of millions of servings of products without a single reported adverse effect, never has been shown to cause problems with food products in processing or on the shelf.
How do you clean equipment used in the processing of products made with GanedenBC30?
GanedenBC30 is very simple to clean and manage in a manufacturing environment. Unlike some strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, GanedenBC30 does not adhere to surfaces and is easily cleaned with readily available cleaning materials.
Can GanedenBC30 be used in low pH products?
It really depends on the application but GanedenBC30 spores have been shown to survive at pH levels as low as 2.3.
What if any label claims can be made using these strains?
Products specific claims would require testing in the finished form, but general probiotic claims may be appropriate so long as inclusion rates are appropriate and testing is completed to verify viability. GanedenBC30 has been shown to support healthy immune and digestive systems and has been shown to survive stomach acid at a much higher rate than traditional probiotic strains.
What is the stability of the probiotics at the end of shelf life?
GanedenBC30 is stable for very long periods of time. We currently have products with shelf lives of over two years but it depends on the application. Our history of use with our strains lets us appropriately dose to ensure shelf life according to requirements.
Are there any common food ingredients that are not compatible with GanedenBC30?
At this point, we have not found any ingredients that affect the shelf life of GanedenBC30.
How does Ganeden work with manufacturers to ensure viability of cells?
We test samples of finished products to ensure activity levels and survival through processing and have validated third party labs to support our clients.
We would like to make a “kitchen sink” product with many different strains of probiotics so we can make a number of health claims. Is GanedenBC30 compatible with other strains?
We do not recommend multiple strain formulations as clinical support for probiotic cocktails are limited. Plus, GanedenBC30 is a unique strain with substantial advantages over many other strains. For example, in most standard food manufacturing processes any other strain that would be used would not remain viable after manufacturing. The only strain that would remain viable after manufacturing would be GanedenBC30 making the combination of strains worthless.
